Keys to Successfully living with hearing loss workshop

CHATTANOOGA – The need for such a workshop is enormous when you consider that one out of every ten Americans suffer from a hearing disability, according to a Gallaudet University report. Nationally, there are reported 32,500,000 hearing impaired Americans.

Dr. Bauman and Mr. Harrison both attended the INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF HARD OF HEARING PEOPLE (IFHOH) CONGRESS 2008 held in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. They both have had long-term profound hearing loss and have a lot to offer at the workshop that will benefit the hard of hearing.

Hearing loss has become a global issue based on the World Health Organization (WHO) 2001 findings. WHO estimates 250 million people have disabling hearing impairment, which is defined as hearing loss that measures in the moderate through profound ranges in the better ear. Additionally, they reported 340 million people have mild hearing loss.

Keys to Successfully Living with Hearing Loss

Hearing loss at any level can have a profound effect on individuals and their families. It causes problems with relationships, marriage, job performance, ability to learn in school and social life. The two most prominent effects of hearing loss for people of all ages is that it produces significant social isolation and stigmatization.

Any hard of hearing person and their hearing family members will benefit greatly from the workshop on Keys to Successfully Living with Hearing Loss. We will discuss topics on Powerful Communication and Coping Strategies, the Social and Emotional Impact of Hearing Loss, and Seven Effective Ways to Avoid Misunderstanding Words.

Hard of hearing people who attend the workshop will be able to hear and understand everything spoken. This workshop will be equipped with FM listening devices supplied by the Williams Sound System of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, and with the telecoil loop amplified system supplied by Univox Company of Denmark for those who wear hearing aids with “T” coil switches. The workshop will have interpreters available for people who need American Sign Language. All lectures also will be captioned on the big screen.

The workshop on Keys to Successfully Living With Hearing Loss is open to anyone who wants to understand and needs help in dealing with hearing loss. It will be held at the Gathering at Memorial Baptist Church at 4445 Hixson Pike, Hixson, TN. The cost is $25.00 person, includes lunch on Sat. Pre-registration is required by Wed. Oct. 15, 2008. The dates are Friday, October 17, 2008, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, October 18, 2008 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Our goal is to help our friends hearing loss overcome communication challenges and regain a better quality of life. For more information please call David Harrison at 423-624-1669 or E-mail at dmharrison1@juno.com or visit our website at www.lipreadingacademy.com

Both these men are severely hard of hearing and are ministers of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They have made their disability a platform for helping others deal with hearing loss. It is their desire to help create an environment for the hearing impaired within the church as well as in the school classroom, and in all places of business.

Our goal is to help our hearing-impaired friends overcome communication challenges and regain a better quality of life. We do on-site workshops and seminars to train people how to handle hard of hearing situation by creating a hearing friendly environment in the church, classroom, workplace, hospital, school, and assisted living home.
