Lip reading classes are open for Hearing impaired from the general public

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
Adjunct Professer David M. Harrison, founder and Director of the Lip Reading Academy will be offering Lip Reading to non-students at Chattanooga State Community College beginning Monday, February 23, 2015. The class is designed to help the hearing impaired improve their communication skills.
WHAT: Lip reading is an alternative language to enhance communication skills for those who have a hearing loss. The learning experience is easy and fun. Lip Reading can be self-taught in almost any language.
WHEN: The classes will be held four Monday evenings beginning February 23, March 2 , 9 and 16 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
WHERE: Classes will be held in the CBHI building (Center for Business, Industry and Health) where the president’s office is located. There is small pond in front of building and parking behind or under the building. Take the elevator to the first floor for directions to the classroom.
From highway153 on Amnicola Hwy, DO NOT turn at the main entrance to campus. Go thru the light and immediately on right you will see Chattanooga State/Olan Mills sign. Turn at the sign and we are the first building on left.
From downtown, go past Coca Cola Co., go under bridge and across railroad tracks. Ahead you will see a traffic light and main entrance to campus. Before you get to traffic light, you will see the Chattanooga State/Olan Mills sign on your left.
WHO: The class is open to any person from the general public with hearing loss, hearing friends or family members. For people with hearing disabilities the classroom will be equipped with an FM listening system for those who do not have hearing aids and need help to see, hear and understand everything for a positive listening experience.
An induction loop is provided for the benefit of those who have a “T” switch in their hearing aid. The loop will send sound signals directly into the hearing aid or cochlear implant with telecoils.
Captioning will be provided for those who are profoundly hard of hearing by request.
WHY: Hearing loss is one of the most prevalent chronic health conditions in the U.S. Fifty million Americans have mild to moderate hearing loss. They are the largest special needs population with serious quality-of-life and accessibility issues according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Hearing loss is called the runaway handicap because very little is being done to help people cope with their loss.
The purpose of the class sessions is to learn valuable ways to cope with problems of hearing in the workplace, classroom, social events and at home.
